AI is Your Co-Pilot. You are the Pilot
Many people are wary or afraid of AI. John Maeda discusses why you shouldn't be afraid of AI and why you should get comfortable with it. Right now.
This week’s issue is sponsored by After Design. AI is going to replace many design jobs in the near future. The change is coming whether you’re interested or not. It’s going to be a little uncomfortable, but all change is.
To prepare for this future, After Design is offering services to help you learn how to use generative AI and, more importantly, figure out what you’re going to do with your career.

Speaking of AI and design, one of the world’s most impressive thinkers on design, John Maeda, has some thoughts. At Microsoft, John is the Vice President of Design and Artificial Intelligence and he has been at the intersection of design and AI for years. Whether it was as the president of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) or EVP, Chief Experience Officer of Publicis Sapient, or as a board member at Wieden + Kennedy, or a professor at MIT, John has been moving design forward, sometimes kicking and screaming.
John was recently on the Design Better podcast and he spoke about using AI as a tool, rather than using AI to replace creativity or design thinking. As designers try to figure out if AI is friend or foe, John has some interesting thoughts on the matter.
I used AI to create many of the images in this infographic.
But I also used my Photoshop skills to modify the second dog. The AI assistant just couldn’t do what I wanted, so I had to resort to the good ol’ clone stamp tool for some areas. It’s too bad I wasn’t doing a Bob Ross for Design with this issue because it could have been educational for those who are learning how to combine generative AI with their design skills.
